The better question is, 'Which screen printing supplies will keep my press running for the next six months?' The machine matters, but the mesh, emulsion, ink, squeegees, tape, and film are the difference between a job that ships and a job that gets reprinted. You can have a $15,000 automatic press and still ship a bad job if your screen tension is off. A $400 manual press with good supplies and a patient printer can turn out work that makes customers think you spent six figures.

One thing that surprises people: the screen itself is a supply. Mesh degrades, frame tension relaxes, and an old screen can ghost an image no matter how good your press is. I tell new buyers to think of every screen as a tool with a lifespan. If you treat it like a permanent investment, you'll chase quality issues for months. Replacing screens is annoying, but it's cheaper than reprinting a 50-shirt order.

When I took over purchasing in 2022, I inherited an old manual press, a stack of screens, and a box of emulsion that was already past its date. I didn't check the expiration date. And Yes, a Deskjet Is an Inkjet Printer. That's Not the Real Question.

Let's get it out of the way: is a deskjet printer an inkjet printer? Yes. Deskjet is a product line of inkjet printers from HP. But 'inkjet' describes the mechanism, not the result. For screen printing t shirts, an inkjet printer can be used to print film positives. A basic deskjet printer can handle simple black line art. It starts to annoy you when you need dense, opaque halftones and reliable registration marks. I use a dedicated inkjet film printer now, and the difference in exposure times is obvious. If you're starting out, use the deskjet you already own—just don't confuse it with a production machine. And if a salesperson tells you a cheap deskjet printer is a dedicated film printer, ask about resolution and ink type before you hand over a card.

Know What You're Actually Competing With

Part of my job is comparing prices. Here's a benchmark I keep in my head, based on publicly listed prices from January 2025: 1,000 flyers on an online print shop run $80–150, and 500 business cards run $20–35. Digital paper printing is cheap. But screen printing t shirts is not a paper print product. It's fabric, ink opacity, durability, and setup time. You can't compare the two on per-piece cost alone. The people who try to run a t-shirt shop like an online flyer printer end up underfunding their screen printing supplies and then blaming the press.

Wait, What About Automation?

I hear the counterargument all the time: 'If we buy an automatic screen printing machine, we can produce faster and need fewer people.' Maybe. I recommend screen printing supplies and a solid manual press for shops doing custom t shirts, event shirts, and small-batch work. I recommend a dedicated inkjet printer for films if you do halftones. I recommend a Creality printer with a 400mm build plate only if you have someone who will actually use it for fixtures. But if your work is full-color one-off prints on garments, screen printing is honestly not the best fit. Walk toward direct-to-garment instead of forcing a screen print. No tool is universal. The right answer is the process you can run without babysitting it.

A good supplier will tell you when not to use their product. The one who says 'this works for everything' is the one I avoid. That's why I trust our current screen printing supplies vendor more than the one who sold us the closeout emulsion.

Build the system first, and you'll spend a lot less on rework—and a lot less time explaining equipment purchases to your finance person.
